As Breuer managed, more by luck than judgment, to trace a particular symptom back to an unpleasant event in her past, the symptom disappeared. Though usually another would take its place. Even though she herself coined the phrase “talking cure”, Breuer exaggerated his success with her. Well, in the end he ran away from her!
Some say her hysteria was her only escape from the boredom of a restricted life, and had little to do with sex.
Oh, she was writhing around in a phantom pregnancy, bearing Breuer’s child … yet her problems had little to do with sex? Very likely!
